we were walking, I remember
to the very end of campus
to the dome shaped building
you looked at me for too long
self-conscious now, I looked at the sky
you are too lanky and maybe a little effeminate
so self-indulgent
I remember thinking that
but something about that foolish grin
something about your sincere happiness
something
freckles and blue eyes
a full moon
I hadn’t decided what I felt about you
only that I liked your company
I sat down
Of course you joined me on the cold grass
avoiding your stare
there was a ring around the moon
we both made a remark about it
pulling out your iPod
you asked if I've heard Beirut
each of us had an earpod in
with outstretched hand
you pulled me up
moonlight and clumsy waltzing
I won’t forget
such a sucker for smiles and accordions
so simple and honest

Dance
Like a river
I’m tossing and turning
The weight of the year
In my shoulders
In my chest
Freefalling
In the midday sun
Leaping
Kissing the sky
Fragments of identity slip away
Exchanged for freedom
Spin
Surrendered
Flinging off reservations and worry
With each twirl
Unfazed by past and future
I’m consumed with here and now
Submission
Yielding joy
I toss away my ashes
For beauty
I’m tossing and turning
The weight of the year
In my shoulders
In my chest
Freefalling
In the midday sun
Leaping
Kissing the sky
Fragments of identity slip away
Exchanged for freedom
Spin
Surrendered
Flinging off reservations and worry
With each twirl
Unfazed by past and future
I’m consumed with here and now
Submission
Yielding joy
I toss away my ashes
For beauty

In My Khaki Pants
I built a great time
hyped up and perfect
Started and ended
without any regret
But I was entitled to more
so I undermined it
Had it all planned
Every step tenderly placed
I'm spotless, pure
She's the one to blame
So I press in, throwing rehearsed accusations
There's no way she can dodge them all
and she doesn't even try
She's not as malicious as I hoped
yet I don't stop the barrage
Too proud
Too hurt
Masochistically bent on destroying what I love
I ruin her night
and poison our memories
Her admittance should be a victory
but it feels like defeat
We had something real together
but now it's a twisted game
and forever corrupted
hyped up and perfect
Started and ended
without any regret
But I was entitled to more
so I undermined it
Had it all planned
Every step tenderly placed
I'm spotless, pure
She's the one to blame
So I press in, throwing rehearsed accusations
There's no way she can dodge them all
and she doesn't even try
She's not as malicious as I hoped
yet I don't stop the barrage
Too proud
Too hurt
Masochistically bent on destroying what I love
I ruin her night
and poison our memories
Her admittance should be a victory
but it feels like defeat
We had something real together
but now it's a twisted game
and forever corrupted

Just Dance
colors flash
rumbles shake the soul
bodies elastic
beats bash
moves are fantastic
desperately trying to look cool
people mash
let's have some fun
she's beautiful
limbs are spastic
out of control
she's left for the bathroom
figures clash
whiff of perfume
she's back
no longer a dash
slowly being spun
into one
there in the black
sweat melds
position is held
compelled
to hold her tightly
make the advance
feel her breath, slightly
consumed in a trance
just dance
rumbles shake the soul
bodies elastic
beats bash
moves are fantastic
desperately trying to look cool
people mash
let's have some fun
she's beautiful
limbs are spastic
out of control
she's left for the bathroom

no longer a dash
slowly being spun
into one
there in the black
sweat melds
position is held
compelled
to hold her tightly
make the advance
feel her breath, slightly
consumed in a trance
just dance
